Serenity flags slipping glass-substrate timelines but reads the delays as a sign the ramp is near
Serenity, the small-cap stock-picker whose reconstructed views this site tracks, spent Friday on a single but central theme: the shifting timelines for glass-core substrates, the next-generation chip packaging material that sits at the heart of one of his highest-conviction holdings.
The delays. He pointed to two pieces of news out of Korea. Samsung Electro-Mechanics, he noted, has pushed the start of its glass-substrate operations out to 2028 — reportedly held up by a bottleneck in customer reliability testing of prototype parts, and revised at the company's recent second-quarter earnings update. Separately, SKC's Absolics unit is said to have moved mass production of its glass substrates from the second half of 2026 into the first half of 2027, with final validation targeted by year-end. In short, both of the leading merchant suppliers have slipped by roughly two quarters.
Why it matters to his thesis. Glass-core substrates are viewed as the successor to today's organic packaging — flatter, stiffer and better suited to the large, dense chips that co-packaged optics (putting the optical engine next to the switch or GPU die) and next-gen AI accelerators will demand. Serenity's play on the shift is not the substrate makers themselves but the equipment that patterns them, and his core position there is LPKF Laser & Electronics (LPK), a German firm he treats as a near-monopoly chokepoint — a critical upstream supplier with few substitutes. LPKF's LIDE laser-etching technology is, on his read, the tooling that most major players have selected for validation; he has repeatedly framed it as the "ASML" of the glass-substrate era, an asset-light, cheaply valued small-cap whose payoff comes from qualification turning into volume orders rather than from current earnings.
His read on the news. Rather than treating the slips as bearish, Serenity argued the direction of travel still points to an imminent inflection: timeline shifts are not always good news, but the sheer specificity of the new dates makes the eventual ramp feel closer, not more distant. He tied LPKF's volume ramp — production orders he expects in the second half of 2026 and mass production in 2027 — to exactly these customer schedules, and named Korean tool peers Philoptics and E&R as others whose fortunes track the same mass-production clock.
