Serenity flags widening MLCC lead times as the next AI-server chokepoint to watch
Serenity, the small-cap stock-picker whose reconstructed views this site tracks, spent Tuesday away from his usual laser-and-substrate hunting ground and instead trained his attention on a humbler component: the multi-layer ceramic capacitor, or MLCC.
MLCCs are the tiny ceramic capacitors that regulate power on virtually every circuit board; a single AI server can carry thousands of them, and the high-capacitance versions used near power-hungry accelerators are the hardest to make. That fits neatly with the framework Serenity applies across his portfolio — hunting for the upstream "chokepoint," the critical supplier with few substitutes that the entire AI buildout quietly depends on, whether that is optical lasers, HBM packaging tools or, in this case, a passive component most investors ignore.
His post today was pure supply-chain tracking rather than a trade call. He walked through lead-time data as a proxy for demand imbalance — the longer buyers wait for parts, the tighter the shortage. On his read, industry reports have escalated server-grade MLCCs to a "severe" shortage stage. He cited figures suggesting Samsung's lead times for some high-capacitance parts have stretched to roughly 40 weeks, up from around 20 weeks earlier in the year, while Murata's have climbed from about 24 weeks in June to 30 in July and as high as 36 now.
The detail that caught his eye was a report that some new capacity expansion has slipped from the fourth quarter of 2026 into 2027. He noted the source did not specify which manufacturer, and speculated it might be Murata, but his broader point was that a delayed capacity build should tighten the bottleneck further in the near term.
No new positions or tickers accompanied the note — Serenity framed lead times simply as a clean signal for spotting demand imbalances, and appears to be flagging MLCCs as a bottleneck worth monitoring rather than one he has acted on yet.
